Bogus Mobile Phone Shield Blocked
New Zealand Herald
August 01, 2003

A company claiming its product blocked mobile phone radiation has been permanently prevented from marketing the device.

The Wave Shield was marketed as blocking up to 97 per cent of electromagnetic radiation to the inner ear, but the claim was too good to be true as far as the Commerce Commission was concerned.

It investigated the claims, and gathered expert evidence that the device would not do what the manufacturer claimed, Commission Director of Fair Trading, Deborah Battell, said in a statement.

"The radiation waves would simply go around the patch and would not, in any case, only be absorbed by the inner ear."

In Christchurch District Court yesterday Judge Stephen Erber sentenced Waveshield (New Zealand) Ltd on four breaches of the Fair Trading Act, the Commission said. Fines totalled $4000 plus costs.
