Mobile phone companies are being urged to hike up the costs of running a mobile phone in the hope that it will discourage children from using them, amid fears that they may be hazardous to the user's health.

Speaking at Glasgow University, Sir William Stewart, president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, said children are "the most susceptible group" when it comes to radiation from mobile phones and not enough is yet known about their potentially harmful effects.

Stewart called advertising which targets children "irresponsible", adding that he would not allow his own grandchildren to use mobile phones.

According to a Powerwatch survey, 85 per cent of children aged between 10 and 15 in the UK have a mobile phone.
